I don’t think I’ve regularly used the “traditional” 2-up 1-down set up in over a decade, mostly because I find having my ride right over the kick drum where the mid tom would be is the most comfortable and I’m able to put my china in a comfortable spot on my right in the rare instance that I’m riding on that surface (though mostly I use it for accents)

Great insight, Brian. I recently played a show where the opening drummer offered to let me use his kit, and it was set up like a double bass kit, without the second kick drum. My only issue was that whe way the hi hat was situated I had a very difficult time hitting the 10" tom. Playing traditional grip doesn't really help, but I was able to get a couple hits in there. A couple years ago I played with the idea of offsetting again, but I really like the "cluster" or snare, 10, 12, 14. Vinnie's kit always looked super comfortable for me to play. The off set looks more open and free. I'm thinking Weckl looking at your kit.

Another interesting topic for me if you were to consider it for a later video, is playing on top of or behind the beat (or on it). To me this suggests that there is a choice - and to me there is usually only one place that feels right, and trying to be anywhere else just don't. Or I would have to listen only to the click and ignore what the rest of the band is doing - if this makes sense.

9:48 venues not using overheads makes accidentally playing the cymbals louder even cringier, as they don't have them going through FOH for a reason. I always set up at least one overhead mic, which I dial up higher and change the relative kit balance for quieter venues or songs. That said, it's been only one step in trying to figure out my mess of an IEM system. I started using stereo monitoring at my home studio years ago, so switching to mono for live has been quite the difficult transition.

old I know, but I picked up a 13x7 G Maple SLP and my god it's phenomenal. I run a Remo P77, tune the fundamental pretty high, and crank the remo hazy snare size and that thing cracks something fierce while still having a pretty good midrange & some low end. Something about the super thick head with the tuning so high and it still has that crack with some pitch resonance. Def loud on the ears though haha Listening to this Walnut I do think it looks amazing, but has surprisingly similar dynamics to the maple :) tone wise is close but not exact
